This blog is part of our Breaking Barriers series that celebrates the remarkable women who play a pivotal role in shaping Securitas into the company it is today.

Meet Blanca Dolly Botero Montoya, a security officer in Colombia and member of Securitas’ Inclusive Surveillance Program. Her story is one of courage, perseverance, and a deep commitment to her work.

Growing up in Cocorná, Antioquia, a region affected by the armed conflict in Colombia, Blanca’s upbringing was marked by adversity. At just 7 years old, she lost vision in her left eye when her brother, panicked by a bomb, accidentally struck her with a machete. Rather than letting this hold her back, she adapted and developed what she now considers one of her greatest strengths: a keen sense of observation.

Blanca has always been determined not to let challenges, or her disability, define her. Her personal experience ultimately led her to discover a newfound passion for security. And through Securitas’ Inclusive Surveillance Program, she’s now turning that passion into a career in the industry. Even without prior security experience, her determination, positive attitude, and ability to learn quickly have proven that a disability isn’t a barrier to excellence – regardless of the industry she works in.

Today, Blanca is a key member of the security team at Gran Estación Shopping Center, demonstrating the power of perseverance and the impact of an inclusive workplace. Her journey is a reminder that challenges can be overcome with the right mindset and support.

Blanca’s Q&A on growth, inclusion, and overcoming challenges

What led you to the security industry, and what inspires you about it?

I really enjoy interacting with people and helping them; working in security is a way to help. Every day, I feel motivated knowing that I can make a difference in people’s lives. Being a part of a company like Securitas, which is committed to inclusion and excellence, has truly been an enriching experience.

What is the most interesting or unique part of your job?

The most interesting part of my job is the opportunity to handle unexpected situations and make a difference in critical moments. Every day is different, and in each shift, there is something new to learn or solve. An unexpected benefit has been the opportunity to prove that, despite adversity, it is possible to excel in what you set out to do.

My experience at Gran Estación Shopping Center, where I was able to identify a criminal gang and stop a thief, is a clear example of how quick action can have a very positive impact, not only in my job but also in the safety of the community.

Blanca is a shining example of our purpose: “We help make your world a safer place.”

How have others motivated you throughout your career?

Thanks to support from my colleagues and supervisors, I have been encouraged to keep moving forward, even in difficult times. The support I’ve received within the company has been fundamental. The Inclusive Surveillance Program and the recognition of my work by my supervisors, including the director of Gran Estación, have given me confidence in my abilities. People who believe in you and push you to keep going are key to achieving great things, and I truly value that, as it has motivated me to improve every day.

How do you see the role of diversity in driving innovation within the security industry?

I believe it is very important for companies to provide people like me with the opportunity to access stable employment. Diversity is essential for fostering innovation in any sector, and security is no exception. Working with people from different backgrounds, abilities, and experiences – and promoting inclusion – ensures that every member of the company feels valued and motivated to give their best in their service.

What brings you joy in your professional and personal life?

In my professional life, what brings me joy is knowing that I contribute to the security of people and the places I protect, as well as the satisfaction of feeling valued for doing my job well. In my personal life, it’s the ability to provide a better future for my children – to see them finish their studies, move forward, and be proud of me like I am of them.

What are your current professional goals, and how do you plan to achieve them?

My current professional goals are to continue growing within the security field, improve my surveillance skills, and gain more knowledge about best practices and technologies in this sector. To achieve them, I will keep learning from my team and daily experiences, taking advantage of the training opportunities provided by Securitas. I also aspire to be promoted and, if possible, become a canine handler.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in security?

My advice would be to never feel inferior to others. Everyone has opportunities in this industry, but they require commitment, attention to detail, and quick decision-making. If someone decides to pursue this career, they must enjoy interacting with people, be highly observant, communicate well, and work as a team. Also, it’s essential to have the right attitude and a drive to continuously learn.
